Christopher  Palmer

 Biography:
Following an early career as a Registered General Nurse, Chris worked as a commercial photographer in Christchurch in the 1980's, after graduating with a Diploma in Commercial Photography from Wellington Polytechnic, New Zealand.

He also continued making personal images, based on the notion that when viewing photographic images one can be reminded of states of inner feeling; that photographs can represent an interior world through the exterior world.

After more than a decade running a commercial studio, Chris re-trained himself and switched to software development, which he continues to do as his primary career.

Financial considerations during the re-training period meant that Chris had to sell all his photographic equipment, resulting in the abandonment of his personal work also.

However, with the emergence of high-quality digital cameras and the ease of use of the "digital darkroom", Chris has taken up the challenge of his personal work once again. He is also digitizing and printing his earlier work.

He is a contributing photographer to VisionLight Photographic Art Gallery, which is an on-line gallery based in the USA. Chris's photographs can be purchased from VisionLight Gallery (http://www.visionlightgallery.com/cpalmer) or by contacting Chris via email (chris.palmer@xtra.co.nz)

Influences
Early influences were Ansel Adams, and Edward and Brett Weston. The writings of Adams and Fred Picker were his teachers in the use of the Zone System. As he developed as a photographer Chris found inspiration in the work of Fay Godwin, Bill Burke, Emmet Gowin, Josef Koudelka, Joel Meyerowitz, Sudek, and Michael Martone. Lately Chris has found Michael Kenna's photography to be very inspiring.
